Overview
This mixed media installation highlights the role of data and algorithms in increased political polarization, particularly surrounding the 2020 US presidential election. Filmed in the days before the election was called, it portrays a time when lies of a stolen election fueled further division in the country. Through video, photographs, and wall-based plywood objects, McIver chronicles a boarded-up, riot-wary Manhattan, where precious luxury brands were hastily fortified and obscured by cheap plywood, vinyl, and plastic. Kristin McIver’s multidisciplinary practice includes sculpture, painting, sound, and installation. Through a conceptual approach, she examines personal identity and its relationship to social media, and how the participants of digital culture become both the subject and object of the media cycle.
