Eva Struble

Motivated by the dynamism of the landscape, Eva Struble’s work investigates what is altered by humans, reclaimed by nature, and the result of their symbiotic interaction. Translating her sensory impressions into abstract compositions, Struble’s works allude to the biodiversity specific to particular areas, regional climates, and changing natural terrains. Oscillating between positive and negative space, Struble builds up the surface of her works, layering and collaging with oil, acrylic paint, or silk and linen fabric. Crisp outlines stand out in stark contrast against whispers of indistinct memories as she translates her corporeal, visual, and wistful sentiments into a symphony of color and texture. Utilizing bold hues, exploratory surfaces, and traces of architecture, Struble envisions a world adjacent to our own whereby ecological transformation is renegotiated outside of human intervention.

Eva Struble (b. 1981 Elsmere, Kentucky) lives and works in San Diego, California. Struble received a BA in Visual Arts from Brown University (2003) and an MFA in painting from Yale University (2006). She is a Professor of Painting and Printmaking at San Diego State University. Recent California-based projects include a solo exhibition at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla, and commissions from the San Diego Google Campus and the Palo Alto Public Art Commission. She was recently awarded a residency at Saiko Neon outside of Tokyo, Japan (2023). Struble’s work has been shown at California Center for the Arts, Escondido Museum, California; Wassaic Project, New York; University of Virginia School of Architecture, Virginia; San Diego Art Institute, California; MoCA San Diego, California; Pomona College Museum of Art, California; La Jolla Historical Society, California; Cleveland MoCA, Ohio; and Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, New York. She has executed public projects at the San Diego Airport, the San Diego Google Campus, the Palo Alto Public Art Commission, the San Diego New Children’s Museum, and the City of Hope Cancer Center in California, among others. Selected residencies include the Vermont Studio Center, the Headlands Center for the Arts, and the Andratx Cultural Center in Mallorca.
