Jane Lombard Gallery is pleased to present a solo installation of LuYang’s work at The Armory Show 2022, as the gallery formally announces its ongoing representation of LuYang in the United States. Featured will be new lightbox-based works and the artist's recent film, DOKU - the Self (2022), which premiered at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Cecilia Alemani. The Armory Show opens September 9-11, 2022, at the Javits Center.
DOKU - the Self invites viewers to follow the film's protagonist, Doku – whose name stems from “Dokusho Dokushi,” meaning, “we are born alone, and we die alone” – on a prodigious journey of six reincarnations. Stylistic elements drawn from Japanese anime, music spanning opera to death metal, video game culture, and various religious iconographies, are interwoven throughout the film.
